Choosing a DJ for your wedding

By Adam Bennett

Choosing a DJ for your Wedding

People usually opt to use DJs because it’s simpler than dealing with a live band and usually less expensive. You will usually find quite a few DJs in your area to choose from, ranging from casual guys that moonlight and do it on the side to professional wedding and corporate DJ companies who usually they come with their own equipment and, if asked for their own light show.

Finding the right DJ is the key to having a great wedding reception. A bad DJ can turn your reception into a nightmare so picking the right one is a very important decision and should be made very carefully.

Below are various things you should look out for in the right DJ for you, these are listed below.

Experience:

This should be the bottom line when choosing the right DJ for your reception. A good experienced DJ will be able to work a crowd and entertain your guests making the reception a special and memorable occasion. An experienced DJ is also able to keep the reception moving along, keeping it’s fresh and exciting.

Good reviews:

Ask friends and family who did the entertainment at their weddings. It’s possible that the DJ who did the last wedding you went to is available. Alternatively ask the companies you’re working with on the wedding to recommend a DJ. They should be able to point you in the right direction of a reputable DJ and might even be able to get you a discount!

Personality counts!

It’s always a good idea, if possible, to meet your DJ before the wedding day to make sure they’re the right kind of person for you. A DJ with a bad attitude could ruin your wedding reception. This will also give you the opportunity to go over all the details of the wedding. If they’re not able to meet you before your big day, have them send you videos of previous receptions they’ve performed at.

A hugely popular hit at receptions is karaoke. A DJ that is set up for karaoke is a big plus and your guests will absolutely love it. But here again you need to make sure the DJ has good equipment and they are set up right for it, otherwise it can just be frustrating for everyone if things don’t work right. If done right it can really make the night!

All professional DJs will have a contract already set up for you to sign and it’s very important to have it signed at least 2 months before your big day. This will straighten out any complications you and the DJ may have. It’s very important to read through the contract and understand the terms and conditions. The contract will include the DJ’s fees, times, details of music curfews and other important details.

Prices for a DJ:

DJ prices can usually range from £150 to £1,000. This all depends on what you’re looking for out of your DJ. There are many add ons for DJs including lighting rigs and extra microphones for speeches.

Finding the right DJ for your Wedding can really make your whole day and not only is it crucial that they work to a high level of professionalism but also that they have an attitude that you feel you could work with.  It’s important not to cut any corners when searching for your DJ. Meet them, ask them questions and only if you feel 100% happy should you sign the contracts and work with them. At the end of the day it’s your wedding, they will do what you want.
